Frequently Asked Questions

What is chiropractic?

Chiropractic is a holistic, natural approach to health. We offer many conservative measures to increase and restore normal function within the body. Our focus tends to be musculoskeletal in nature, however, we can also address many other conditions and complaints. Our goal is to help our patients reach optimal health through chiropractic adjustments, rehabilitation exercises, acupuncture, massage, nutrition, and physiotherapies.

What is a chiropractic adjustment/manipulation?

A chiropractic adjustment, or manipulation as it is sometimes called, is a technique that we use to facilitate and/or enhance movement within a joint. Injury, whether it be from trauma or even every day activities, disrupts the natural movement of a joint. Our goal is to recreate the proper motion, that was disrupted by injury and allow the body to heal itself.

What is the sound sometimes produced from adjustments?

The sound that is occasionally heard, during a chiropractic adjustment, is from a nitrogenous gas pocket. Each joint is surrounded by a capsule that is filled with fluid and gases. It is within this capsule that the nitrogen content can build up. Once released, via an adjustment, a small "popping" sound may be heard.

Is it bad to frequently "crack" your own back or neck?

Many people associate "cracking" of one's back or neck with a chiropractic adjustment. Actually, the two are NOT equivalent. During an adjustment, a doctor of chiropractic delivers motion to a specifically targeted joint. This joint is one that has been found to be inhibited or not moving correctly. When someone attempts to adjust themselves, they are actually only moving hypermobile segments. Continual self-attempts may cause future problems of spinal joints trying to compensate for the unstable segments.

How does an adjustment feel?

Initially, an adjustment may cause some minor muscle soreness, but usually it isn't considered painful. Muscles, that have been inhibited from the joint dysfunction, are now forced to perform like they should. People may notice change in joint function as soon as after the first day of treatment. If a patient is accustomed to a particular technique or type of adjustment, our doctors will do their best to accommodate him or her. Our goal is for you to have the best experience possible.

How long will my course of treatment take?

The length of treatment varies with each individual and condition. One must realize that if a complaint has been around for a while, it isn't going to be corrected with one visit. However, you should notice vast improvement after a few treatments. While being treated, patients will be encouraged to actively participate at home. This is a way to expediate the duration of therapy.

Should I continue chiropractic care, even if I feel better?

It is recommended to continue with preventative care, but that decision is ultimately up to you. Once a complaint is resolved, it becomes the patient's obligation to monitor and prevent re-injury. Preventative therapy transfers that responsibility to the doctor. Periodic appointments can be arranged to review systems. By preventing re-injury, it saves one valuable time and expense.

Will I be X-Rayed?

X-Rays are important and often required in determining the cause of a condition. The X-Rays allow the doctors to have a better understanding of your complaint in order to create a patient-specific treatment plan. X-Rays will only be preformed if the doctor believes that they are necessary. In some cases, advanced imaging may be warranted. In this situation, a referral will be given to an outside facility.

What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a part of ancient Chinese medicine. The Chinese believed that there is energy, or Chi, that flows through channels or meridians within the body. If the energy becomes blocked, is in excess, or depleted, then dysfunction occurs. Acupuncture helps to correct the flow of energy by stimulating certain points with needles along the meridians.
